TOURNAMENT STRUCTURE

Since the contest is designed so that nearly every vehicle that moves will score 5 points, participation from schools who have not competed in a Hardware Contest is strongly encouraged! In this spirit, a special, one-time plaque will also be awarded to the top scoring rookie team courtesy of the UK student chapter! Since we anticipate many such "nubies," good sportsmanship should be displayed at all times by veterans of Hardware Competitions.

The hardware contest will see a total of two random preliminary rounds with each team having an opportunity to compete on each of the two tracks to ensure fairness. The teams with the top scores will proceed to the quarter final round. Head-to-head competition will then occur within the two categories with the top seeded team facing the 8th seeded team, number 2 will vie with number 7, etc. The higher seeded (better) team will be given the choice of which order to go and which track to compete on with the lower seeded team running on the remaining track. The top seeds will have the "home track" advantage throughout the quarter, semi- and final rounds. Winners will be based on the head-to-head competition, not the top 4 scores (for example, if two head-to-head competitors score more points than any of the other 6 teams, only the victor will advance). The victors of the 4 quarter final matches will then proceed on to the semi-finals.

The overall hardware contest winner crowned in the final match pitting the winners of the semi-finals. There will be a five minute break between quarter/semi/final rounds to give competitors time to make modifications/repairs.

Flash and video cameras will be allowed in the spectator area but not in the playing area. All designs should take this into account.

As with every SoutheastCON, unforeseeable problems WILL occur. To forestall controversy in such matters, an official contest steward will preside over the contest with assistant stewards. In cases of debate, only team captains will be permitted to converse with the steward and the steward's decision is final.

Good luck to all and see you in Lexington, March 1999!
