We made TOP 5 in semifinals and TOP 8 in finnal at SECON 99!!

PACO 99 project had as its goal to represent USM and to win in the SECON 1999 hardware robotics contest that is organized every year by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).  In this competition, undergraduate and graduate engineering students from most south east United States universities show their robots that fight to make the best exhibition.

In this occasion SECON 99 hardware design contest take place in Lexington, Kentucky, an it had the theme, "A Grand tour of Kentucky." This theme highlights features that make Kentucky a unique state, presented in the form of a tour to be driven by an autonomous vehicle. SECON 99 was hosted by the university of Kentucky.

The State of Kentucky contains a wide variety of landscapes and cultures, from large urban areas such as Louisville to the horse farms of Lexington and central Kentucky, from the mountains of Appalachia to the mines and caves in the western reaches of the state. In this contest, an autonomous vehicle makes a grand tour of these four regions of the Bluegrass State, and may choose to tackle the challenges of any or all of them. See the contest rules for detailed information. In addition, we made a virtual reality (VRML) model of the playfield. To see this model you need the VRML plug-in in your browser.

In this web, PACO 99, our robot, is described in detail. PACO is composed mainly by an Motorola HC11 CPU, a LCD Display, stepper motor group, IR. tracking line system, and ultrasonic range device. Here are shown block diagrams, hardware schematics, software code, and pictures.
